Check the version of the kernel currently running

The uname command will give you the version of the kernel. In order to get a more useful output, type

uname -a

This will return : the hostname os name kernel release/version architecture * etc.

variations

If you only want the kernel version you can type

uname -v

if you only want the kernel release you can type

uname -r
